How to Set Up Assignment Paths

Connect multiple Training Paths into one automated program

What this guide helps you do

Set up an Assignment Path from start to finish grouping Training Paths into a defined sequence, configuring unlock logic, and connecting it to manual, role-based, location-based, or new-hire-event assignment.

If you're managing a structured program: new hire onboarding, role certification, or multi-stage compliance training, start here.

Step 1: Understand What an Assignment Path Is

An Assignment Path (AP) sits above Training Paths (TPs). It groups multiple Training Paths into a defined order and handles unlock logic automatically with the next Training Path becoming available only after the previous one is completed.

Assignment Paths can be assigned manually or triggered automatically based on role or location.

Example: New Hire Onboarding

  1. Company Orientation
  2. Food Safety Certification
  3. Role-Specific Training
  4. Manager Sign-Off Assessment

Each Training Path unlocks only after the previous one is marked complete. When connected to your onboarding workflow, the entire sequence starts automatically on a new hire's first day becoming active in the system, no manual triggering needed.

💡 Pro tip: Assignment Paths are highest value for onboarding-heavy teams. If new hires go through more than two Training Paths, an Assignment Path will save significant manual tracking time.

Step 2: Confirm Your Training Paths Are Ready

Assignment Paths are built from existing Training Paths, so make sure each one is finished and published before you start.

Before you begin, each Training Path should have:

  • Its content, quizzes, and skill evaluations added
  • Who gets assigned already scoped (job role, location, or individual users)
  • Completion rules set (passing score, retake attempts)
  • Supervisors assigned

What to know: Existing Training Paths are not automatically enrolled in Assignment Paths. HQ Admins must add them from the new Assignment Paths section, nothing changes for a Training Path until you explicitly place it into an AP.

Step 3: Create Your Assignment Path

  1. Go to the Assignment Paths section.
  2. Create a new Assignment Path and name it.
  3. Add your Training Paths in the order they should be completed.
  4. Configure whether the sequence is sequential or grouped.
  5. Set assignment rules: manual, by role, or by location.

Note: Only Training Path's that match the criteria of your Assignment Path can be pulled in. For ex, a Training Path set to 'New' members only, can only be pulled into an Assignment Path also set for 'New' members only.

Choose your sequencing model:
  • Sequential: Training Paths complete in order. The next Training Path unlocks only after the previous one is marked complete.
  • Grouped: Training Paths are bundled under one Assignment Path for unified assignment and tracking, without an enforced unlock order.

💡 Pro tip: Use sequential for programs where order matters, like onboarding or certification. Use grouped when you just want unified tracking across related trainings that can be taken in any order.

Step 4: Set Assignment Rules

Decide how the Assignment Path gets assigned to learners.

  • Manual: Assign the AP directly to specific users.
  • By role: Anyone matching the specified job role is automatically enrolled.
  • By location: Assignment applies to everyone at the specified location(s).

Note: When assignee criteria is set to a role, any new user who activates their account and matches that role is automatically enrolled the same logic that governs individual Training Path assignment.

Step 5: Confirm Permissions

Assignment Paths default to a restricted access model, so this step is easy to miss.

Note: When Assignment Paths are enabled for your account, access defaults to Master Admins only. To extend access to other corporate roles, update permissions under User Role settings.

If Location Admins or Supervisors need visibility into Assignment Paths, grant that access explicitly before launch, they will otherwise see the individual Training Paths but not the sequence view.

Last Step: Review & Launch

Before going live, do a quick check:

  • Are the right Training Paths included, in the right order?

  • Is the sequencing model (sequential vs. grouped) set correctly?

  • Are assignment rules configured — manual, role, location, or new hire event?

  • Do the right roles have access to view and manage the Assignment Path?

  • Once published, the Assignment Path is live and will begin assigning Training Paths according to your rules.

What happens next?

After launch:

  • Learners will only see the Training Path tab, not Assignment Path
    • From the Training Path tab, they will see a clear, ordered sequence of required training, with the next module unlocking automatically
  • Location Admins and Supervisors get a unified view of where each team member is within the sequence, instead of tracking multiple individual Training Paths separately
  • HQ Admins can monitor completion across the full program from a single configuration

Assignment Paths are fully additive, existing Training Paths and their individual assignment logic are not affected by adding them into an AP.
